What I’ve been up to…

Not long after setting up this website, I got a new job. Though the new role has taken up a good bulk of my time, I haven’t stopped writing and pitching. I’d say I’ve actually written more in the past six months than at any other point in my life. Because of my hectic schedule, this blog has sadly been an afterthought. Now that things have settled work-wise, I’m ready to start updating more regularly, and it made sense to do a bit of a content dump here to keep track of what I’ve been up to since being away - for my sanity more than anything else. Below you’ll find some writing highlights from the past six months, complete with links to articles and a few album recommendations.

Interviews

Threading the Needle: An Interview with aya

aya is one of the most exciting, playful and dexterous producers working in electronic music. I was delighted to interview her about her new album for The Quietus. It’s a wonderfully open discussion about this key time in her career. Check out the interview above, and pre-order her debut for Hyperdub, im hole.

Brian d’Souza and Ambient Flo

Ambient Flo is one of many excellent curated music radio projects that thrived during lockdown. I was able to chat to its creator about it for Loud and Quiet.

My Place: Danny L Harle

In one of the more surreal interviews I’ve done, hardcore and hyperpop producer Danny L Harle took me on a tour around his virtual club. It’s a bit like Cribs but with boss battles and trance.

I also interviewed Serpentwithfeet for Issue 8 of Goldflakepaint. DEACON is such a wonderfully uplifting and cosy album. It was great to speak to him about the process of writing its collection of love songs. You can check out the physical edition here.

Reviews

I’ve done many, many reviews over the past few months, here are a few highlights based on albums I really loved diving into:

Features and Columns

The <1000 Club column for Loud and Quiet has been one of the most rewarding writing projects I’ve been involved in. The central idea is to highlight an artist who has less than 1000 plays on Spotify, while exploring the shortcomings of the platform itself. We’ve had a great range of artists featured. Two of my favourites are this one on Nico de Benito, and another on El Blanco Nino.

I’ve also been a bit obsessed with remix albums recently, which encouraged me to write about the current golden age the medium is experiencing. It became my first feature for CLASH.

That’s all for now. I’ll be updating this blog with more writing projects as they happen!
