On Limón, Holly Readman packs a lot of different feelings into a squiggly synth line and some barebones drum machines. It’s sexy and scary in the same breath. It’s cute and monolithic. It simultaneously reminds of hooky pop and synth experiments by the likes of Anna Meredith and ABRA, but there’s no doubt that as Straight Girl, Readman is finding a voice of their own.

Limón is a song about queer sexuality and shame, and the way those feelings can stick to each other, becoming entangled and oddly enticing. Their voice is obscured by a lumbering beat, cycling back through one lone verse about the sour fruits that spill out of them. It’s pretty and a little bit gross, and their increasingly intense performance captures that dichotomy. There’s a punk quality to the way Readman sings, which brings a raw energy to balance their dazzlingly bright production.

It’s hard for any act to be able to conjure an introspective club track, especially one that’s bold enough to say a lot with so little. The stripped back structure of the track is a gutsy move that pays off well. Limón underlines Straight Girl as a strong voice to keep an eye on.
